EU Parliament Backs 2035 Combustion Engine Ban

FDP Resistance Leads to Postponed Vote

EU Postpones Combustion Engine Ban Vote

The European Parliament has voted to support a ban on the sale of new combustion engine cars from 2035, but resistance from the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in Germany and Italy's right-wing government has led to the postponement of the final vote.

The ban was initially considered a formality, but the FDP's opposition, along with the influence of Italy's Giorgia Meloni-led administration, threw a spanner in the works. The European Parliament's Industry, Research, and Energy Committee (ITRE) was set to vote on the proposal on October 12, but the FDP and Italy's delegation stalled the proceedings.

The FDP argues that the ban would hurt Germany's automotive industry, which heavily relies on combustion engine production. Italy's government has also expressed concerns about the impact on its domestic auto sector. The ban's postponement represents a setback for environmental groups, who argue that it is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change.

The outcome of the eventual vote remains uncertain, with the FDP and Italy likely to continue their opposition. However, the European Commission, which proposed the ban, has vowed to press ahead with its plans. The delay has raised concerns about the EU's commitment to its climate goals and its ability to act decisively on environmental issues.
