The 15th edition of the South American Championship, the predecessor to the Copa America, was held in Lima, Peru, from January 15th to February 12th, 1939.

The tournament featured seven teams: Peru, Uruguay, Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, Ecuador, and Colombia. Peru ultimately emerged victorious, capturing their second title in the competition's history.

As the tournament progressed, Peru continued to impress, winning their next three matches to secure a place in the final. Uruguay, Chile, and Brazil also advanced to the final round, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion.

In the final, Peru faced Uruguay, the two most successful teams in the competition's history. The match was a tense and closely fought affair, with both teams having chances to win. In the end, it was Peru who emerged victorious, winning 2-1 and securing their second South American Championship title.
